First thing I have to say is LAYNE STALEY is on Opiate with Maynard here. Surprised that wasn't mentioned in the notes. Im very curious about this recording. Who, when, where was this remastered and tracked? There are qualities to it that are great, and others not so much. It would make sense if it was only remastered way back in that time. Otherwise...hmm. Well anyway, The drums sound pretty great here. Has a bit of that compressed cannon sound, which at first is a little jarring because it sounds big and hollow comparitively to other recordings, but once you are in it, they are nice. Kick has a nice click, if maybe slightly too much. Hihats sound great but may be a touch loud. Snare cracks pretty well. Toms sound nice all around in general. Cymbals are crisp, if a little tiny bit quiet. Vocals are a bit quiet mostly and a little muddy. Especially in the quieter parts. His screams and yells come out on top really nicely though. Guitar is perfect volume, IMO, but could some high end. Bass has practically perfect low end. Thats what I am happiest about here. The low end on the bass might finally be the best from this era. By the time it hits track 5, Undertow...some things get worked out a little. Vocals are a little more consistent. etc. Prison Sex slaps pretty great. Bass is a little too crisp here, but the overall is actually kind of great for this track in particular. This is finally a recording where the toms on the drums are essentially perfect...albeit in backwards stereo. But most of the board recordings, there seems to always be something going on with the toms...usually a lack of bottom end. Not here. Very well balanced here. Its hard to decide between 7, 8 , and 9 stars here honestly. And upon further inspection...this seems to be the first, or one of the first recordings of many that feature this "canon" type tone to dannys drumset in a row. The next few recordings at least, all as well appear to have that tone...so It basically has to be his drum kit...and had quite possibly started using a new one here or around this date. *Or an old set that he hadn't whipped out yet. Obviously all speculation...but Im pretty good at that.

Good capture, it's complete. Bit of a glitch here and there but nice elongonated set for summer '93.
